Filmed over the course of three evenings at the Birmingham NEC in 1991, "Performance" features the Pet Shop Boys in top form, showcasing some of their greatest songs. I hesitate to say "singing," as this is, as the title suggests, a performance piece. Lavish sets, garish costumes, and a calvacade of dancers and backup singers make this a needed addition to any PSB fan's collection. The weakest track would be "What have I done to deserve this" and that is only due to Dusty Springfield's absence; I fear I've been spoiled by the "Montage" version. That is not to say that this track on "Performance" is terrible; it is just that it is not the same hearing another woman sing backup. Standouts are "Jealousy," "It's a sin," and "We all feel better in the dark." 　　As with the "PopArt" DVD, the commentary is generous and a kick to watch, giving greater insight into Tennant and Lowe's songbook. Enclosed is an interview with Neil and Chris from '91, as well as one with David Alden and David Fielding. 　　"Performance" contains perhaps the most intriguing ninety minutes worth of concert footage I've ever been privy to witness; it will require multiple viewings just to take everything in, and even then, it will always seem fresh and new, as if experiencing it for the first time.

“Pet Shop Boys: Then and Now”, a new “Imagine…“ documentary feature with Alan Yentob, will be airing on BBC One on 16th April. This is the first time Neil and Chris have allowed backstage access to a camera team, accompanying them during the Dreamworld tour for an intimate look inside the world and creations of Pet Shop Boys. In this feature, Alan Yentob will also be talking to Tennant and Lowe about the new PSB album,“Nonetheless”, and their creative evolution over the past four decades. Film of the legendary 1985 concert performance presented by the New York Philharmonic of Stephen Sondheim's classic musical at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. The plot of the musical centers around a reunion of showgirls who appeared in an annual Follies extravaganza when it was staged between the wars. Sally and Phyllis are two of these former showgirls, now middle-aged. Sally is married to Buddy, and Phyllis is married to Ben. Sally is unhappy with Buddy, and still is madly in love with Ben after a brief affair they had when they were younger. Phyllis is going to divorce Ben, so all seems right. But the reason Phyllis is divorcing Ben is because he is incapable of showing real, genuine love. Will Sally truly be happy if she leaves Buddy and marries Ben? Okay, the plot isn't much, but the songs are wonderful. The show features frequent "pastiche numbers" in which other former showgirls perform numbers in the style of the period in which this Follies was staged. These numbers, juxtaposed against the moving "book songs," make for a truly brilliant score.
